Home remedies for Itchy skin

Itchy skin is a common problem. As per the severity, it could be mildly annoying to intensely irritating, disrupting daily activities and sleep. Itchy skin could be said one of the most irritating problems we face. The more you scratch, the more it itches. If you keep on scratching, it could lead to a rupture in the skin and then bring infections. Itching could occur due to varied causes like allergic reactions, insect bites, skin infections, dry weather, soaps and detergents and even due to some medications. Here are some easily available natural ingredients by using which you can reduce itching in your skin.


Coconut Oil

Whether It be due to dry skin, an insect bite or other, whatever the cause of the itching be, Coconut oil may help you in this problem a lot. The way to use it is to rub a little coconut oil directly onto the affected area.


Lemons are one of the best remedies for itchy skin as they are rich in vitamin C and also have bleaching properties.

Simply cut a lemon in two and squeeze out a little juice directly over the itchy area, then allow it air dry. You’ll quickly get some relief. Repeat it twice daily until the condition get improved.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is the most easily available home remedy for itchy skin and skin rashes as well.

Add 1 part of water to three parts of baking soda to make a paste.

Apply this paste to the itchy area. Don’t use this remedy if the skin is broken.

If the itchiness is spread all over the body, put 1 cup of baking soda into a tubful of lukewarm water and soak your body in it for half an hour; then dry in air.

Tulsi or Holy basil

Just wash a few leaves, then crush and rub them over the itchy area. Or you may prepare its tea by boiling a few leaves in water in a covered utensil and then dip a cotton ball or cloth into that tea. Apply this tea to the itchy skin through this cotton ball or cloth. Basil leaves or Tulsi leaves contain anti-itch compounds called camphor and thymol which have ability to reduce irritation of the skin.

Apple Cider Vinegar

It is said to have a good antiseptic and antifungal action which makes it a good anti-itching agent.

Take a cotton ball or cloth and dip it in a little apple cider vinegar and apply on the itchy area.

If you suffer a general itchy sensation all over the body, use 2-3 cup of apple cider vinegar in your lukewarm bath water. Taking a bath with apple cider vinegar added water is another popular itchy skin home remedy.

Aloe Vera

Rub Aloe Vera gel over itchy spot. It would help you to reduce the skin irritation in that area and give quick relief from itching.

Cinnamon and Honey

Take 2 tsp cinnamon powder and 2 tsp honey together, Mix them well and make their paste. Apply this paste on the itchy area and leave it for 10-15 min, then wash off with water. Use this paste 3 times a day.

Coconut oil and Lemon juice

Take 6 tbsp of coconut oil and include 4 tbsp lemon juice in it, Mix these well and then heat the mixture till it turns lukewarm. Pat on the affected area and leave it overnight.

Oatmeal or Cornstarch

Take a bath of oatmeal or cornstarch added lukewarm water and soak your body completely with it. It could reduce itching and swelling of the skin.

Juniper Berries and Cloves

Juniper berries and cloves when used together produce an excellent home remedy for itchy skin.

Blend the mixture of 5 tablespoons of ground juniper berries and 3 tablespoons of ground cloves well. Leave the mixture to cool. Now, apply the mixture on affected skin and leave it over night. Have a cool shower or bath in the morning.


Peppermint oil is found to have anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, analgesic and soothing properties that could mitigate itching happened due to dermatitis, scabies or stress. Insert several drops of peppermint oil in a bathtub filled with lukewarm water. A few drops of peppermint oil to the bath water can soothe your skin and diminish pain.

Add 3 or 4 drops of peppermint oil to 1 tablespoon of carrier oil like coconut, olive or almond oil. Apply the diluted peppermint oil to the affected region. Follow this remedy once or twice daily for better result.


Applying a paste of sandalwood or using sandalwood oil on the itchy region of the skin would cool the skin and offer some relief.In the same way, Neem oil could provide the same benefits against itchy and dry skin.
