Oil secretion is good for the hair for it maintains the roots well but anything in excess is never good and the example of it is the oily hair. The hair is calle oily hair when it has a greasy appearance from 2nd to 3rd day after shampooing. The secretion of sebum by the sebaceous glands of the scalp is the cause of the oiliness. The secretion of sebum is controlled by androgens which are found to be present in small quantities in women. Secretion of sebum starts at the teenage and the hair shall be greasier in women during menstruation. So, it is essential to avoid the propagation of sebum into scalp to prevent the damages to the hair and the scalp due to the growth of bacteria and fungi. The too much sebum chunk the hair follicle and disturb the blood circulation resulting in weak hair.
Oily hair is also level to the problem of dandruff which in turn causes terrific hair fall. Oily scalp needs to be washed every alternate day; sometimes every day to fight the excessive secretion of oil and to keep the hair clean. Oil on the scalp invites dirt and grime. The dirt and grime tend to block the hair follicles present on the scalp which can lead to falling of hair.

There are several factors responsible for the excess secretions of oil from the sebaceous glands. Some are
Heredity and Stress.
Hormonal fluctuation in women due to menstrual cycle, use of birth control pills, etc.
Excessive consumption of oil rich food and Poorly adapted hair care.

Surplus sebum production which make the hair heavy, weak and difficult to manage.
Formation of greasy dandruff which sticks to the sebum forming a layer on the scalp.
Itchiness of the scalp and hair loss or progressive thinning of hair.
